Trupanion vs Healthy Paws vs Nationwide: three designs, one decision

This matchup is really two different products wearing three logos. Trupanion and Healthy Paws sell uncapped coverage and disagree about aging; Nationwide sells capped plans and benefit schedules under a famous name, plus the one thing nobody else will touch: your parrot.

The verdict in 30 seconds: For a cat or dog, Trupanion (9.8 on our board), then Healthy Paws (9.2), then Nationwide (7.7), and the gap between second and third is bigger than the gap between first and second. No current Nationwide retail plan offers uncapped payouts or 90% reimbursement, and its benefit-schedule option pays fixed amounts that vet inflation left behind years ago. Choose Nationwide for one reason: a bird, rabbit, reptile, or other exotic, where it is essentially the only game in town.

What Nationwide actually sells now

The Nationwide plans people remember, Whole Pet with Wellness and its 90% uncapped years, are gone. The company non-renewed roughly 100,000 legacy policies in 2024 and 2025 (a class action is pending), and today's retail shelf is the Modular plan with $2,500 to $10,000 category caps, a restructured Whole Pet capped at $10,000, and Major Medical, which pays a fixed benefit schedule per condition rather than a percentage of your actual bill. Benefit schedules are the oldest design in pet insurance, and vet-price inflation eats them alive: the schedule's allowance for a condition and your hospital's invoice for it are different numbers, and the difference is yours. If you were searching "Trupanion vs VPI," this is that comparison: VPI is Nationwide's original brand and still underwrites its California policies. The exotics exception, stated fairly

Nationwide is the only major US insurer covering birds, rabbits, reptiles, and most exotics, with Modular exotic plans from around $5 a month. If that is your pet, the rest of this page is irrelevant and Nationwide is a fine answer. Avian and exotic vet medicine is expensive and specialized, and capped coverage beats no coverage. This is the one column where Nationwide's 7.7 is really a 10 by default.

The real contest: the two uncapped policies

Strip Nationwide out and this becomes our standard top-two matchup, which turns entirely on age. Healthy Paws is slightly cheaper for a young pet and processes claims in about two days, but its deductible resets annually, its renewal prices climb steeply, and its reimbursement menu shrinks with enrollment age until hip dysplasia coverage disappears at 6+. Trupanion holds 90% at any enrollment age, charges each condition's deductible once per lifetime, and never raises rates for birthdays or claims. The complete argument is in Trupanion vs Healthy Paws, and the premium behavior is in our Trupanion cost guide.

Choose Nationwide if

  • Your pet is a bird, rabbit, reptile, or anything else without fur and a bark: nobody else will insure it.
  • You want a cheap accident-only Modular config as a catastrophic floor and accept the caps that come with it.

Choose Healthy Paws if

  • You're enrolling a puppy or kitten on a tight budget and want uncapped payouts at the lowest workable entry price.
  • Two-day reimbursement matters more to you than direct pay at checkout.

Choose Trupanion if

  • You're buying for the whole lifespan: same 90% plan at any enrollment age, premiums that ignore birthdays and claims.
  • You want chronic conditions to cost one deductible total, not one per year.
  • You want the hospital paid at checkout instead of fronting five figures and waiting.
Two of these prices change with age. One doesn't.

Bottom line

Nationwide brings a household name, an exotics monopoly, and a shelf of capped plans that our methodology can't rank higher than third. The real decision for cat and dog owners is between the two uncapped designs, and that decision comes down to whether you want a policy priced for the pet you enroll or repriced for the pet they become. We think the answer is the first one, and it's why Trupanion holds our top score.

Which is best: Trupanion, Healthy Paws, or Nationwide?

For cats and dogs, Trupanion (our 9.8) over Healthy Paws (9.2), with Nationwide (7.7) third: the first two never cap payouts, while every current Nationwide retail plan caps at $10,000 or pays a per-condition benefit schedule, with no 90% reimbursement option. Nationwide wins one scenario outright: it is the only major insurer for birds, rabbits, reptiles, and other exotics.

Is Nationwide's VPI the same as Nationwide pet insurance?

Yes. Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI) was the original brand and still underwrites Nationwide's pet policies in California. If you are comparing Trupanion vs VPI, you are comparing against today's Nationwide plans: Modular category coverage, a restructured Whole Pet capped at $10,000, and the benefit-schedule Major Medical.

Why do Trupanion and Healthy Paws outrank Nationwide?

Payout structure. Both cover eligible costs without annual or lifetime caps, while Nationwide's current plans cap categories at $2,500 to $10,000 or pay fixed benefit schedules that lag real vet prices. Nationwide also non-renewed roughly 100,000 legacy Whole Pet policies in 2024 and 2025, which is worth knowing when buying a product you intend to hold for a pet's lifetime.
