How Much Does Cat Insurance Cost in 2026?

Cat insurance runs $15 to $55 a month for accident and illness coverage, with a typical adult mixed breed landing around $20 to $35. That is roughly half of dog pricing, and the reason is not that cat medicine is cheap. It is that cats file fewer claims, right up until they file the same claim every month for eight years.

What every major insurer charges for cats

These are the published cat ranges for the insurers we track. Every number assumes accident and illness coverage; accident-only and wellness plans are different products.

InsurerCats (monthly)The structural catch
Lemonade~$14 to $33Annual payout caps of $5,000 to $100,000 by tier
Spot~$17 to $35Annual caps from $2,500; unlimited tier costs far more
Embrace~$19 to $45Capped on most configurations
Nationwide~$19 to $41Caps or benefit schedules on every current plan
Pets Best~$20 to $29$5,000 cap or unlimited, by tier; annual deductible
Fetch~$20 to $35Annual caps; steep age-based renewal increases
Healthy Paws$24 to $45No caps, but reimbursement drops if you enroll older
Trupanion$25 to $55None: no caps, 90% reimbursement, once-per-condition deductible

The spread between the cheapest and priciest quote for the same cat is maybe $25 a month. What that $25 buys, or fails to buy, only shows up when a big diagnosis arrives, which is why we score payout structure so heavily in our rankings.

What your cat costs to insure, by cat

CatTypical monthlyWhy
Kitten (mixed breed)$15 to $25Youngest age, empty chart: the cheapest coverage of their life
Adult mixed breed$20 to $35The sweet spot; enroll here or earlier
Purebred (Maine Coon, Persian, Sphynx)$30 to $55Hereditary heart and kidney conditions price in
Senior (10+)$40 to $70Still insurable before diagnosis; Trupanion enrolls up to the 14th birthday

Breed matters more than most cat owners expect. Maine Coons carry hypertrophic cardiomyopathy risk, Persians carry polycystic kidney disease, and insurers that cover hereditary conditions price those genes from day one. If you have a purebred kitten, the enrollment-timing argument below applies double.

Why cat claims are different, and why it changes what to buy

Dogs generate acute claims: swallowed socks, torn cruciates, broken teeth. Cats generate chronic ones. The big four of feline medicine are kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, and cancer, and three of the four are managed for years rather than cured. A diabetic cat needs insulin, syringes, glucose curves, and rechecks every month, indefinitely. Chronic kidney disease means fluids, prescription food, and bloodwork on a schedule that only ends one way.

This is where policy structure quietly beats sticker price. An annual deductible resets against a chronic condition every single year: a $500 annual deductible over 8 years of kidney disease is up to $4,000 in deductibles before reimbursement even starts each January. Trupanion's deductible applies once per condition for the cat's lifetime, so the same $500 gets paid exactly once, and every claim after it reimburses at 90% from the first dollar, uncapped. We walk through the full pricing machine in our Trupanion cost guide.

The chronic math, concretely: a $500 deductible against 8 years of feline diabetes costs up to $4,000 on an annual-reset policy and exactly $500 on a per-condition policy. For cats specifically, the deductible structure is worth more than a $10 difference in monthly premium.

The four levers that set your quote

  • Age at enrollment. The biggest one, and it only moves against you. Most insurers also reprice your cat older at every renewal; Trupanion locks the pricing basis at enrollment age for life.
  • Breed. Mixed breeds are the budget option. Purebreds with documented hereditary risks pay for their pedigree.
  • ZIP code. Premiums track local vet prices. The same cat costs more to insure in Seattle than in Wichita because the ultrasound does too.
  • Deductible and reimbursement choices. Raising the deductible is the lever you control most directly, and on a per-condition structure it is a much safer lever to pull. The full cost guide covers how each choice moves the number.

"But my cat stays inside"

Indoor status is the most common reason cat owners skip insurance, and it protects against the wrong risk. Staying inside prevents cars, coyotes, and abscesses. It does not prevent kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, lymphoma, or the urinary blockage that turns a $30 bag of food into a $3,000 emergency. Insurers know this, which is why almost none of them discount indoor cats. We wrote up the full argument, including the honest case for skipping coverage, in Is pet insurance worth it for an indoor cat?

The timing rule: cheap now is cheaper forever

Every path through cat insurance pricing runs through the same gate: the day you enroll. Enroll a healthy 2-year-old and every future condition is coverable, at a 2-year-old's price. Wait until the senior bloodwork flags creatinine at age 9, and kidney disease is pre-existing everywhere, forever, per the pre-existing rules. Cats make this trap worse than dogs do, because they hide symptoms until diseases are established; by the time a cat looks sick, something is usually already in the chart. The cheapest and the most-covered version of your cat's policy is always the one that starts today.

Cat insurance cost FAQ

How much is cat insurance per month?

Most cats quote between $15 and $55 a month for accident and illness coverage. A typical adult mixed-breed cat lands around $20 to $35; kittens quote lower, and purebreds and seniors quote higher. Budget carriers like Lemonade start near $14, while Trupanion's uncapped policy runs $25 to $55.

Why is cat insurance cheaper than dog insurance?

Cats file fewer and smaller claims: they are smaller animals with cheaper drug doses, they suffer far fewer orthopedic injuries, and they are less likely to eat things that require surgery. Premiums are roughly half of dog pricing across every major insurer.

Is insurance cheaper for an indoor cat?

Most insurers do not price indoor and outdoor cats differently, and the diseases that generate the biggest cat claims, like kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, and cancer, do not care whether the cat goes outside. Indoor status reduces accident risk, not illness risk.

How much does kitten insurance cost?

Kittens are the cheapest cats to insure, commonly $15 to $25 a month for mixed breeds. That first quote also matters beyond the sticker: enrolling before anything appears in the medical record keeps every future condition coverable, and with Trupanion the enrollment-age pricing basis is locked in for life.

Is pet insurance worth it for a cat?

The premiums are low, but so is the claim frequency, so the deciding factor is usually the chronic-disease scenario: a cat that develops kidney disease or diabetes at age 8 can generate claims every month for the rest of its life. If a $3,000 to $6,000 chronic-care year would strain your finances, coverage is worth it; if you could comfortably self-fund that, it may not be. Our worth-it math works through both cases.

The bottom line

Budget $20 to $35 a month for a typical cat, $15 to $25 for a kitten, and more for pedigrees and seniors. Then spend your attention where cat insurance is actually won or lost: not the premium, but the deductible structure and payout caps that decide what eight years of a chronic disease costs you. Our cat insurance guide covers the coverage side, and the rankings show how all eight insurers stack up.
