"He's an indoor cat" is not a health plan.
Cats hide illness like it's their job, which is why cat emergencies arrive later, sicker, and more expensive. The good news: cats are the cheapest pets to insure, often under $30 a month.

The indoor-cat myth, examined
Keeping a cat indoors removes cars, coyotes, and fights. It removes none of these: urinary blockages, kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, dental disease, lymphoma, or the houseplant they absolutely will chew on. Look at the claims list above: almost every major feline expense is an illness, not an accident. Indoor status barely moves the risk.
Notice something else about that list: nearly everything on it is chronic. Kidney disease, thyroid disease, and diabetes are managed for years, not cured in a visit. That's why deductible structure matters even more for cats than for dogs:

Two cat-specific things to check in any policy
1. Urinary blockage coverage, without asterisks
A blocked male cat is a same-day, no-negotiation emergency that runs $1,500–$4,000, and cats who block once often block again. You want it covered as an illness with no special sub-limits, and you want it on record as covered before the first episode makes it pre-existing.
2. Hereditary conditions for purebreds
Maine Coons and Ragdolls carry hypertrophic cardiomyopathy risk; Persians carry polycystic kidney disease. If your cat has papers, hereditary coverage is the line to verify. Trupanion covers hereditary and congenital conditions as standard; details in our review.
Cat coverage is the cheapest it gets, often less than a bag of the fancy food. Quotes are free and personalized.

Is insurance worth it for an indoor cat?
The claims data says indoor cats generate most of the same expensive conditions as outdoor cats, because the expensive conditions are illnesses, not accidents. At $20–$35/month, one urinary blockage pays for years of premiums.
Does insurance cover dental?
Dental illness (extractions from resorptive lesions, gingivostomatitis) is covered by quality insurers including Trupanion. Routine cleanings are wellness care and aren't; budget for those separately.
My cat already has kidney disease. What now?
That condition is pre-existing and won't be covered by anyone. Honesty matters here, because claims get checked against vet records. But everything unrelated that happens next can still be covered. Enrolling still has value; it just can't rewind time.
