The four levers that set your price
1. Your pet's age at enrollment
The single biggest factor. A 2-year-old lab might quote at $55/month where an 8-year-old quotes at $110. 2. Breed

4. Deductible and reimbursement choices
The lever you actually control. Raising your deductible drops the premium significantly, but how the deductible works changes what a "high deductible" means:
Say your dog develops allergies at age 3 and lives to 13, with $900/year in treatment.
Annual $500 deductible (most insurers): you pay the first $500 every single year. Over 10 years: $5,000 in deductibles before reimbursement even starts each January.

- Enroll young. Puppy and kitten premiums are the lowest your pet will ever see, and early enrollment beats every discount that exists.
- Raise the deductible, especially on a per-condition structure, where a higher number is a one-time cost per illness, not an annual toll.
- Skip wellness add-ons. Prepaying $30/month for $350 of predictable care is a payment plan, not insurance. Budget for checkups; insure catastrophes.
- Don't chase the cheapest quote. A $22/month policy with a $5,000 annual cap evaporates exactly when you need it. Price the structure, not the sticker.
