Dog insurance guide · 2026

Dogs are a genre of expensive surprises.

They eat socks. They tear ligaments chasing squirrels they were never going to catch. And the breeds we love most carry the priciest genetics. Here's how insurance handles all three, and when to buy it.

What dogs actually claim for

Most common categories, industry-wide

  • Skin & ear conditionschronic, recurring
  • Stomach issues / eaten objects$500–$7,000
  • Cruciate ligament tears$3,500–$6,000
  • Lameness & arthritislifelong
  • Cancer (esp. 8+ yrs)$8,000–$20,000

What dog insurance costs by size

Breed drives price more than almost anything except age. Rough monthly ranges for accident + illness coverage on a young adult dog:

DogTypical monthlyWhy
Small mixed breed$30–$50Genetic diversity, fewer hereditary claims
Medium (spaniels, heelers)$40–$65Middle of the road on everything
Large (labs, shepherds, goldens)$55–$90Joint disease, cruciate tears, cancer rates
Brachycephalic (frenchies, bulldogs)$70–$120Airway surgery, skin folds, spine issues
Giant (danes, berners)$75–$130Bloat, bone cancer, shorter lifespans

If you have a purebred with known hereditary risks, coverage for hereditary and congenital conditions is non-negotiable, and it's exactly the line where budget policies get vague. Trupanion covers hereditary conditions outright, which is a big part of why it tops our rankings for purebred dogs especially.

The puppy window is a real thing

Insurance-wise, a puppy is a pet with a blank medical chart. Nothing is pre-existing yet. The moment your vet writes "intermittent limp, monitor" in the record, hip and knee coverage gets complicated with every insurer on the market.

The move: enroll at 8–12 weeks, before the first "let's keep an eye on that." Puppy premiums are also the cheapest of the dog's life. And with Trupanion, aging after enrollment never raises your rate.

The three dog-specific traps

Trap 1: Bilateral condition clauses

Dog tears left cruciate ligament, gets surgery, then tears the right one a year later. This happens constantly. Many policies treat the second knee as pre-existing if the first tear happened before enrollment. One more reason the enrollment date matters more than the brand.

Trap 2: Annual caps meeting chronic conditions

Allergies, arthritis, and skin conditions are the most common dog claims, and they never end. A $5,000 annual cap works fine for one broken leg and terribly for a decade of dermatology. Caps are the first thing we score in our rankings.

Trap 3: The wellness add-on math

Wellness plans prepay routine care at roughly a 1:1 ratio, minus overhead. Your money is better spent on a lower deductible or higher reimbursement on the catastrophic side, which is the side you can't budget for.

Dog insurance FAQ

Is insurance worth it for a healthy young dog?

A healthy young dog is precisely the pet insurance is designed for: full coverage locked in before anything exists to exclude, at the lowest premium they'll ever qualify for. Waiting until the first problem is how people end up uninsurable for the thing they most need covered.

Does insurance cover hip dysplasia?

If it's diagnosed (or symptomatic) before enrollment: no, nowhere. If you enroll first: Trupanion and most quality insurers cover it as a hereditary condition. Some budget policies impose extra waiting periods or exclusions for orthopedic issues; read that section of any policy you consider.

What about older dogs?

Premiums rise with enrollment age and Trupanion's cutoff is the 14th birthday, but a 9-year-old with a clean chart can still get real coverage, and cancer risk peaks exactly in those senior years. The only bad time to enroll is after the diagnosis.
