What Trupanion actually is
Trupanion has insured cats and dogs since 1998 (it launched in Canada, expanded to the US in 2008, and is publicly traded as TRUP). Unlike carriers that sell pet coverage as a sideline, medical insurance for pets is the entire company. That focus shows up in three design decisions no competitor fully matches.
The three things that make it different
1. No payout caps. None.
No annual limit, no lifetime limit, no per-condition limit. This is the single most important line in any pet insurance policy, because caps are invisible until the exact moment you need them not to exist. A dog with lymphoma can run $12,000–$20,000 in a year. On a $10,000-cap plan, you're uninsured for the second half of that fight. On Trupanion, the math never changes: eligible costs are covered at 90%, forever.
2. The deductible you pay once per condition, for life
Everyone else uses annual deductibles: every January, the meter resets. Trupanion's deductible ($0–$1,000, you choose) applies per condition, and once it's met for that condition, it's met for your pet's lifetime. If your cat develops diabetes, you pay the deductible toward it exactly once, then every insulin refill, recheck, and complication for the rest of their life is covered at 90% from dollar one.
3. It can pay the hospital before you do
At clinics running Trupanion's software, the claim is processed at the front desk in minutes and Trupanion pays its 90% directly to the hospital. You pay your share and go home. No fronting a $6,000 surgery on a credit card, no receipts, no waiting weeks for a check. Thousands of hospitals across the US and Canada are equipped, and you can check whether yours is when you get a quote.
What's covered
- Accidents and injuries: fractures, swallowed objects, bite wounds, torn ligaments
- Illnesses: cancer, diabetes, allergies, infections, digestive issues
- Hereditary and congenital conditions: hip dysplasia, heart defects, cherry eye
- Unidentified issues: vomiting, limping, lethargy, even without a final diagnosis
- Diagnostics, surgeries, hospital stays, medications, prosthetics, supplements for covered conditions
- Optional riders: recovery & complementary care (rehab, acupuncture, behavioral), and pet owner assistance (boarding during your hospitalization, liability, and more)
What's not covered, and Trupanion says so plainly
- Pre-existing conditions. True of every insurer on earth. This is the reason to enroll early.
- Exam fees. The office-visit charge ($50–$100) is on you. A handful of competitors cover this; it's Trupanion's most notable gap.
- Wellness & preventive care. Vaccines, checkups, routine dental. Trupanion doesn't sell a wellness add-on at all. Their position is that predictable expenses aren't what insurance is for. We think that's honest, and we note some people prefer a bundled plan anyway.
What it costs
Trupanion is a premium product with premium pricing: typically $60–$110/month for dogs and $25–$55/month for cats, depending on breed, age at enrollment, ZIP code, and the deductible you pick. Two pricing behaviors matter more than the sticker:
- Your price is built for your actual pet (breed, age, location), not a bucket average, so you're not subsidizing riskier pets.
- Your premium doesn't go up because your pet had a birthday or because you filed claims. Rates adjust only with the cost of veterinary care in your area. Filing a $30,000 claim doesn't mark you.
You can also pull the price down substantially by choosing a higher deductible. Remember, it's once-per-condition, so a $700 deductible is a very different risk than $700-per-year.
Quotes are free, personalized, and take about two minutes. Enrollment is available from 8 weeks up to your pet's 14th birthday, and once they're in, they're covered for life.

Trupanion vs. the field, in one sentence each
- vs. Healthy Paws: both skip payout caps, but Healthy Paws' deductible resets annually and reimbursement drops as pets enroll older.
- vs. Lemonade / Pets Best: they'll beat Trupanion's monthly price; they won't match its structure when a chronic condition arrives.
- vs. Embrace: Embrace covers exam fees and shrinks your deductible in healthy years, but payout caps apply on most configurations.
- vs. Nationwide: unless you have a bird or a bearded dragon, this isn't close.

Verdict
The one we'd put our own pets on.
Trupanion costs more per month and covers less of the routine stuff. That's the point. It's engineered for the day a vet says a word like "lymphoma" or "obstruction," and on that day, no caps + one-time deductible + paid-at-checkout is a different product than everything else on the market.

Does Trupanion have an annual payout limit?
No. No annual, lifetime, or per-condition caps. Eligible costs are covered at 90% regardless of the claim size or how long a condition lasts.
How fast does Trupanion pay claims?
At hospitals running Trupanion's checkout software, in minutes: Trupanion pays the hospital directly, and you only cover your share. At other clinics, you submit an itemized invoice and get reimbursed; most claims process within days.
What are the waiting periods?
Coverage starts after a short waiting period from enrollment: historically 5 days for injuries and 30 days for illnesses, though exact terms vary by state (some states have eliminated waiting periods entirely). Your quote will show the terms for your location.
Can I choose my deductible?
Yes: anywhere from $0 to $1,000, in $5 increments in most states. Higher deductible, lower premium. And because it's per-condition-for-life rather than annual, a higher number stings far less than it would on other insurers.
Does my vet take Trupanion?
Every licensed vet in the US and Canada "takes" it; there are no networks. The only variable is whether your hospital has Trupanion's software for direct pay at checkout. If not, you pay and get reimbursed like any other insurer.
